Long before the advent of the Mercedes-Benz SLS, car enthusiasts and tuners had sought to evoke the spirit of the Three-Pointed Stars famous ‘Gullwing’. In the early 1980s, German tuning house Styling-Garage unveiled its C126-based 500 SGS Gullwing, while towards the end of the decade, Hartmut Boschert set out to replicate the trick with the newly launched C124.

Boschert’s take on the gullwing theme, the B300,was built on a 300 CE, modified to accept the front end from an R129-generation SL. Significant alterations were made to the car’s structure, including extending the C-pillar by about 25 centimetres and reinforcing the sills to accommodate the wild 1.66-meter-wide gullwing doors that granted access to the rear seats. The front seats, too, were borrowed from the R129 SL, while the engine received a twin-turbocharger upgrade, resulting in an impressive power output of 283 horsepower.

The car’s debut at the 1989 Frankfurt International Motor Show was met with critical acclaim, generating much anticipation for its eventual release. However, despite Boschert’s ambitious plan to produce 300 examples, only a handful were ever made, making this B300 a true rarity.

The example offered here is no exception. It is the only Boschert B300 to feature gullwing doors, a feature that further enhances its exclusivity. The car’s original life began as a Mercedes-Benz 300 CE, painted Astral Silver with a black interior. In 1990, it underwent a stylish makeover, undergoing a fresh coat of Bornite paint over a two-tone purple leather interior.

In 2005, the Boschert found its way into the hands of its current owner, who has cherished it ever since. The car remains in pristine condition, retaining its original ownership manuals, service records, and even a wooden steering wheel, in-car phone, and car cover. In addition, a treasure trove of period sales and development materials, brochures, periodicals, and VHS video tapes accompanies it, providing a glimpse into the car’s fascinating history.

This Boschert B300 ‘Gullwing’ is not just a rare and unique vehicle; it represents a pinnacle of Mercedes-Benz-based specials from the era. With its gullwing doors, twin-turbocharged engine, and impeccable condition, it stands as a testament to the passion and creativity of Mercedes-Benz enthusiasts and tuners, who have always sought to push the boundaries of automotive design and performance.
