If the 1960s were the golden age of V-12-engined Ferrari GT cars, then the following decades saw a shift towards mid-engined marvels. But in 1996, the automotive world witnessed a remarkable resurrection of a classic formula,a front-engine V-12 grand tourer. The Ferrari 550 Maranello, with its 5.5-liter V-12 heart, rear-mounted transaxle, tubular chassis, and timeless Pininfarina styling, paid homage to the legends of the past while embracing modernity.

The Ferrari 550 Maranello marked a significant milestone in Ferrari’s history. It was the first all-new, two-seater V-12 GT car from the legendary automaker in over a quarter of a century. This grand tourer was a statement, a rekindling of the passion that had defined V-12-powered Ferraris of the past.

The heart of the 550 Maranello was its magnificent 5.5-liter V-12 engine. This powerhouse produced a symphony of 485 horsepower, seamlessly blending performance and elegance. The tubular chassis ensured that the car was not just about raw power but also impeccable handling. With a rear-mounted transaxle, it had near-perfect weight distribution, a characteristic highly coveted by enthusiasts and a hallmark of the greatest GT cars.

As you gazed upon the 550 Maranello, the spirit of classic Ferraris whispered from every contour. The iconic long hood with its subtle curves, the understated yet captivating lines, and the timeless front-engine design all harked back to the legendary Ferraris of the past. In late 1998, Ferrari decided it was time to showcase the true potential of the 550 Maranello. The hallowed grounds for this endeavour were the Transportation Research Facility near Columbus, Ohio. A specially prepared 550 Maranello, finished in Grigio Titanio with Bordeaux leather interior, was ready to break records.

Modifications were made to enhance the car’s performance. Changes in suspension and steering were paired with a roll cage, racing seats, and a quick-fill refuelling system. Csaba Csere and Duilio Truffo, seasoned automotive journalists, took the wheel. The result? Averaging 190.2 mph and 188.9 mph for 100 miles and 100 kilometres, and a jaw-dropping 184 mph over a one-hour period.

The successful record-breaking endeavour led to something special, the birth of the limited-edition 550 Maranello WSR. Just 33 of these magnificent machines were produced, and only 10 of them were right-hand drive. Each of them carried the Fiorano handling pack, carbon fibre bucket seats, competition-style four-point safety harnesses, and a leather-trimmed roll cage.

The 550 Maranello WSR was a combination of elegance, power, and exclusivity. Many were finished in an identical contrasting colour scheme that made them even more striking. It was a testament to Ferrari’s commitment to pushing boundaries while paying homage to its rich heritage.
