2016 McLaren 675LT Spider

When McLaren unveiled the 675LT coupé in 2015, it was a return to the marque’s legendary “Long Tail” lineage, a name that harkens back to the iconic F1 GTR race car of the mid-'90s. Designed as a more hardcore, track-focused evolution of the already impressive 650S, the 675LT took the supercar world by storm with its aggressive styling, weight-saving measures, and uncompromising performance. But McLaren wasn’t done yet. Enter the 675LT Spider, a topless variant that delivered all the raw performance of the coupé, but with the added thrill of open-air driving.

At the heart of the McLaren 675LT Spider is the same 3.8-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine that powers its coupé sibling. This formidable engine produces 675 PS (666 bhp) and 678 Nm of torque, propelling the car from 0 to 100 km/h in just 2.9 seconds, and 0 to 200 km/h in a blistering 8.1 seconds. Despite the addition of a retractable hardtop, the Spider’s performance remains virtually identical to the coupé, with a top speed of 327 km/h (203 mph), just a hair shy of its fixed-roof counterpart.

What makes this performance even more remarkable is that McLaren managed to keep the added weight of the convertible mechanism to just 40 kilograms, resulting in a total dry weight of 1,270 kg. This weight-saving obsession is evident throughout the car, with extensive use of carbon fibre, from the lightweight Monocell chassis to the body panels and even the rear wing.

The 675LT Spider is a purpose-built track weapon. Like the coupé, it features advanced aerodynamics, including an active rear wing that doubles as an air brake, ensuring optimal downforce and stopping power at high speeds. Carbon ceramic brakes come standard, with massive 394 mm front and 380 mm rear discs, gripped by six-piston callipers in the front and four-piston callipers in the rear. These are designed to deliver consistent, fade-free braking, even under the most extreme track conditions.

The car sits on a set of Pirelli P-Zero Trofeo R tyres, which offer 6% more grip than the P-Zero Corsas on the 650S. Combined with 19-inch front and 20-inch rear lightweight wheels that shave off 800 grams per wheel, the 675LT Spider delivers an extraordinary level of agility and precision, ensuring that every corner feels tight and controlled.

The interior of the 675LT Spider mirrors the exterior’s focus on lightweight performance. With Alcantara-lined racing seats and a stripped-down cabin, every element is designed with function in mind. Carbon fibre is present everywhere, reinforcing the car’s performance credentials. Despite its minimalist approach, the cabin retains a level of refinement and luxury befitting the McLaren badge.

The retractable hardtop roof, which can be operated in just 16 seconds, offers the best of both worlds: the intense roar of the V8 with the roof down, or a more insulated experience when closed. It’s this versatility that makes the Spider version of the 675LT particularly special,it’s as thrilling on the road as it is on the track.

With only 500 units produced, the McLaren 675LT Spider is a rare beast. Each one represents the pinnacle of McLaren’s engineering prowess, blending insane performance with the kind of driving purity that’s becoming increasingly rare in an age of hybrid powertrains and advanced driver aids. This is a car for the purist, the enthusiast who wants to feel every ounce of power and hear every decibel of the engine note as they tear down a winding road or blast through a racetrack.

What’s more, the 675LT Spider’s “Long Tail” styling gives it a distinctive look that sets it apart from the rest of McLaren’s lineup. The extended rear, combined with its aggressive aerodynamic elements, gives the car a purposeful, track-honed appearance that’s as functional as it is beautiful.

It retains all the incredible engineering and performance of the coupé, with the added thrill of top-down motoring. For those lucky enough to own one, it’s a visceral, immersive experience that connects driver and machine in a way that few modern cars can.

In a world where supercars are increasingly defined by their technological wizardry, the 675LT Spider stands out as a celebration of raw performance and driving purity,a true Long Tail legend that lives up to its name.
