That all began to change in the mid-1930s, when BMW debuted a car that would set the brand on its path toward becoming an iconic name in motorsport and performance engineering: the BMW 319/1 Sport. The foundation for the 319/1 Sport was laid by the BMW 303, a compact family saloon introduced in 1933. The roadster was succeeded by the legendary BMW 328, a car that would go on to become one of the most successful and iconic sports cars of its era. Many of the 328’s technological innovations, such as its tubular steel chassis and advanced suspension, were direct evolutions of the systems developed for the 319/1.
