1968 Porsche 911 T/R
The Porsche 911 T/R stands out as one of the rarest and most sought-after early iterations of the 911. Created in response to the FIA’s 1968 reclassification for Group 3 GT-class racing, the T/R was Porsche’s first homologation special based on the 911 platform. With its lightweight design, stripped-down interior, and racing pedigree, the 911 T/R solidified its place in the storied history of Porsche’s motorsport dominance.
Porsche began with the 911T, the entry-level Touring model, as the base for the T/R. This decision provided a platform that was lighter than the higher-performance 911S, offering an ideal starting point for further weight-saving measures. The T/R underwent extensive modifications to shed additional weight, including the removal of soundproofing materials, carpeting, and other non-essential comforts. These efforts reduced the car’s weight by 118 pounds (54 kg) compared to the 911S, enhancing agility and responsiveness on the track.

The 911 T/R offered two engine configurations. Buyers could choose the standard 2.0-liter flat-six Type 901/02 engine or the high-performance twin-ignition Type 901/20 engine, derived from the Porsche 906 Carrera 6 race car. The latter delivered a formidable 210 PS (207 hp), pushing the limits of what the lightweight chassis could achieve. Both engine options were paired with Porsche’s Type 901 five-speed gearbox, renowned for its precision and durability.
To complement the upgraded powertrain, Porsche equipped the T/R with a host of racing enhancements, including; A limited-slip differential for better traction , a lighter flywheel and strengthened clutch for faster engine response and a front-mounted oil cooler to manage temperatures under racing conditions.

Optional extras included a roll bar for safety, a larger 100-liter fuel tank for endurance racing, a special exhaust for improved performance, and wider Fuchs wheels for better grip. Many T/Rs were also adorned with distinctive 911R-inspired paint stripes.
Porsche produced between 28 and 35 examples of the 911 T/R, making it one of the rarest 911 variants. These cars were campaigned successfully in their era, competing in endurance events, rallies, and hill climbs. Their rarity and motorsport success have made surviving examples highly desirable among collectors and enthusiasts.

The Porsche 911 T/R holds a unique place in the 911’s lineage as the progenitor of a tradition that would lead to iconic homologation specials like the 911 Carrera RS 2.7 and later GT models. Combining raw performance, minimalistic design, and racing credibility, the T/R encapsulates the spirit of Porsche motorsport.
For purists, the T/R represents the ultimate expression of the early 911: a race-bred machine that pushed the boundaries of what a road car could achieve while staying true to Porsche’s philosophy of engineering excellence. Whether displayed as a collector’s centerpiece or raced at historic events, the 911 T/R continues to embody the essence of Porsche’s competitive heritage.
