Unexpected Collaborations

Unlikely partnerships between manufacturers, designers, engineers and private teams that produced cars no participant would have created alone under one roof.

About this collection

The motor industry’s most interesting partnerships often begin with incompatible instincts. Mercedes-Benz and McLaren approached the SLR with different ideas of what a flagship should be; Nissan and Italdesign transformed an anniversary exercise into the limited GT-R50; and private engineers pushed the Sunbeam Tiger far beyond its factory identity. This collection gathers cars created in the productive friction between companies, disciplines or cultures. Some collaborations resolved their contradictions beautifully, while others preserved them in the finished machine. In every case, the result carries decisions, capabilities and tensions that no single participant would have produced independently.
