About this collection

Some cars fail because they are badly conceived. Others fail because the vision behind them is larger than the company, market or balance sheet can support. This collection gathers cars that represented unusually ambitious attempts to enter new markets, challenge established manufacturers, introduce expensive technology or build low-volume machines to standards their makers struggled to sustain commercially. Many were technically accomplished, beautifully engineered or strikingly original; their failure was not necessarily a reflection of the car itself. Instead, these models became entangled with high development costs, limited production capacity, insufficient demand, fragile finances or manufacturers whose ambitions repeatedly outran their resources. Some were produced in tiny numbers before disappearing, while others survived long enough to become symbols of companies perpetually fighting for stability. Their stories are compelling precisely because the engineering and commercial outcomes point in different directions. These are cars that demonstrate how automotive ambition can produce remarkable machines while simultaneously exposing just how difficult it is to turn an extraordinary idea into a viable business.
